Number of hours to meet the requirement for initial onboarding training

  • Private-Pay Caregiver: No specific training requirements.
  • Direct Care Worker (Medicaid): Approval is required for several topics, but CareAcademy does not have approval. In-person component required; hours not specified. Training must cover ADLs, IADLs, Emergency Procedures, Fall Prevention by an agency RN in person.
  • Home Health Aide: 75 hours (59 hours classroom and 16 hours practical).

Number of hours to meet the requirement for annual training

  • Private-Pay Caregiver: No annual training requirement.
  • Direct Care Worker (Medicaid): 4 hours annually to enhance knowledge and skills, recommended to avoid repeating the same topics. CPR & First Aid certification must be maintained, HIPAA/Client Rights & Elder Abuse must be taken annually (approval required for initial but not for annual).
  • Home Health Aide: 12 hours annually.

Caregiver training requirements are determined by the care setting in which they work. Care settings in West Virginia are sometimes required to be licensed, though not always. The different Agency license types in West Virginia include: Home Health Agency, Personal Care Agency and Hospice Agency.

Licensing authority is the Department of Health & Human Resources, Bureau of Medical Services, Bureau of Senior Services. Regulations are under the BMS Provider Manual Chapter 517.

Approved Medication Assistive Personnel

Licensing authority is the West Virginia Department of Health & Human Resources. 

Home Health Aides (HHAs)

Licensing authority is the West Virginia Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification. Regulations are governed by BMS Chapter 508 Home Health and 42 CFR 484.80 (Federal Code of Regulations).
