Number of hours to meet the requirement for initial onboarding training

  • Personal Support Service Workers (PSSWs): Personal Support Service Workers must complete topic-specific initial training within 30 days of hire.
  • Home Health Aides (HHAs): Home Health Aides must complete 75 hours of initial training, including 59 hours of topic-specific training and 16 hours of practical training. This training must be completed prior to providing services independently.

  • Personal Support Service Workers (PSSWs):There are no specified annual training requirements for private-pay PSSWs. Public-pay PSSWs must comply with the training set by Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) and Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs).

  • Home Health Aides (HHAs): Home Health Aides must complete 12 hours of continuing education annually.

Caregiver training requirements are determined by the care setting in which they work. Care settings in Tennessee are sometimes required to be licensed, though not always. The different Agency license types in Tennessee include:
